Description
Group of three hand reverse appliqué and appliqué construction throughout, each worked in two to four layers.
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1950s, 14. 5 x 19 inches
Worked on 3 layers with four mirrored rectangular spirals/labyrinth arranged in a quadrant composition on a red ground, with continuous herringbone leaf-pattern fills between the channels in peach and teal-gray. The densely worked herringbone motif running through the spiral channels is a hallmark of traditional Guna abstract patterning, with a sawtooth zigzag border along the upper edge.

Mirrored concentric rectangular forms with central elongated U-shaped elements on a black ground, 2 layers, featuring bold yellow herringbone leaf-pattern fills throughout the channels with pink, teal, blue, and orange accents. The high-contrast color palette and rhythmic herringbone fills create a striking visual depth characteristic of accomplished Guna geometric work.

Worked on 3 layers with mirrored rectangular S-spirals on a pink ground with herringbone leaf-pattern fills between the channels in teal, blue, yellow, and gray, framed by multicolored striped borders. The use of a pink palette rather than the more common red or black ground is distinctive, and the consistent herringbone fill treatment unifies the spiral composition.
