Group of 3 hand reverse appliqué and appliqué construction throughout, each worked in three to four layers.
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s, 18 x 19 inches
A three layered mola with mirrored concentric arch forms connected by a central vertical axis on a red ground, with sawtooth zigzag cutwork borders along the channels in black, teal, and yellow. The addition of gold rickrack trim along the upper edge reflects the Guna practice of incorporating trade materials into traditional textile construction.
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1950s, 15.5 x 18 inches
A four layered mola with interlocking angular star or pinwheel design on a dark ground, featuring bold sawtooth zigzag borders in green, yellow, red, and peach throughout. The dynamic rotational composition and densely cut zigzag patterning demonstrate an advanced level of geometric abstraction in Guna design.
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s, 20 x 15 inches
A three layered mola with four symmetrical butterfly or bow-tie forms arranged in a quadrant grid on a red ground, each filled with parallel vertical dash accents in yellow, teal, white, and pink. The repeated motif format with varied color fills within each unit is a characteristic Guna compositional approach that creates visual rhythm across the panel.
