Description

Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s
12 x 15.75 inches
Reverse appliqué, appliqué, and hand-embroidered mola panel depicting a Christian crucifixion scene with Christ on the cross at center, flanked by two standing figures — one at lower left and one at lower right wielding a long pink-tipped lance piercing Christ’s side — executed in three layers of red, burgundy, and black cotton. The central cross is outlined in concentric bands of orange, yellow, and green, with the figure of Christ rendered in dense polychrome hand-embroidery including the crown of thorns, facial features, and loincloth. Densely populated field of embroidered X-motifs in yellow, pink, blue, purple, and orange surrounds the composition. The lanced-Christ imagery reflects the fusion of Catholic iconography with Guna artistic traditions, possibly referencing Saint Longinus.
Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection.
