Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s–1970s

Reverse appliqué, appliqué, and hand-embroidered mola panel depicting two facing spirit birds with outstretched wings, one wearing an elaborate feathered headdress and the other a crested cap, flanking a central staff, executed in two layers of black and red cotton. The birds perch atop a long horizontal platform suggestive of a pedestal or base. Polychrome slitwork fills the wing feathers and surrounding field in yellow, blue, green, orange, pink, and white, with fine hand-embroidered detail accenting the headdress plumes, facial features, and central staff. Retains green rickrack and red binding along the upper edge from original blouse construction.
