Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Reverse appliqué, appliqué, and hand-embroidered mola panel featuring two confronting jaguars, each densely worked in multicolor running stitch with white-inlaid eyes and bared teeth, seated atop paired bottle-form vessels banded with polychrome rick-rack trim and rows of four-pointed cross or pinwheel motifs in black and multicolor cotton, worked in three layers of red, black, and charcoal cotton. A central stylized tree or plant form with embroidered black lobed leaves divides the two figures, flanked by additional foliate appliqué forms in the upper corners. Polychrome appliquéd dash-stitch fills the outer border throughout.
