Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Reverse appliqué, appliqué, and hand-embroidered mola panel featuring a central cruciform spirit figure with a rayed white halo, outstretched arms, and a densely dot-stitched body in black and green, surmounted by a framed cartouche bearing the letters “CTO,” worked in three layers of burgundy, black, and orange cotton. Two large confronting birds with white-inlaid eyes and polychrome striped wings flank the figure in the upper register. Two pairs of crossed anchors anchor the lower corners, connected to the central figure by looping chain motifs. Extensive multicolor hand embroidery and polychrome appliquéd dash-stitch fill the composition throughout. A rare syncretic narrative design combining Christian, political, and Guna symbolic elements.
