Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s

Boldly conceived text-and-object mola panel on a red ground featuring two horizontal registers of large appliquéd lettering in each row, with the oversized letter forms serving simultaneously as decorative containers for embedded motifs. Within and between the letters, stylized hammers and narrow-necked vessels or bottles are worked in multicolor reverse-appliqué and embroidery — the hammers in blue, orange, yellow, and purple; the vessels in blue, pink, lavender, and orange — each outlined against the red ground with green sawtooth edging throughout. Scattered multicolor dash and oval fill elements animate the negative space between forms. The upper edge carries an orange rick-rack border. The composition is organized in two mirrored rows, creating a repeating, grid-like visual rhythm across the panel. Executed in three layers of red, green, and crimson cotton, with appliquéd letterforms and extensive multicolor embroidered surface detail.
