Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s

Exceptional narrative mola panel on a deep crimson ground depicting traditional Guna musical instruments and ceremony. A large central maraca — rendered as a densely embroidered dotted circular head in orange, teal, and white on a woven black handle — dominates the center field, flanked symmetrically by two tall pan flutes worked in black and blue with reverse-appliqué striping. Two small appliquéd spirit musician figures occupy the lower register, each with an embroidered black face, white-dot detailing, and multicolor costuming with elaborate embroidered skirts and white-outlined boots. A curved white embroidered line arcs between the figures, suggesting a ceremonial rope or musical connection. The upper border carries two lines of appliquéd text reading “UBICANTUB / TU LE NEGA” in multicolor letters on a black ground, referencing Guna ceremonial or musical tradition. The surrounding field is densely worked in vertical reverse-appliqué channels throughout. Executed in three layers of red, black, and crimson cotton, with appliquéd elements and extensive multicolor embroidered surface detail.
