Description

Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
12 x 15 inches
Exuberant and fully saturated holiday mola panel on a deep crimson ground featuring a large central Christmas tree worked in layered orange and yellow reverse-appliqué branches, crowned with a five-pointed star with embroidered floral center. The tree is hung with numerous appliquéd ornaments — round baubles in black with blue and yellow embroidery, diamond-shaped gift tags in black and white, and small bell forms in multicolor striping — suspended from blue and green embroidered garland lines. A bow-tied tree stand in green with multicolor striping anchors the base. The lower register is populated with appliquéd wrapped gift packages in orange, blue, and red with embroidered ribbon and bow detail, a striped candy-cane stocking at lower left, and a striped ball at lower right. A glowing candle with radiating yellow embroidered light rays occupies the right margin. Two pairs of appliquéd Christmas bells with pink ribbon bows flank the upper corners. The ground is densely covered with scattered multicolor triangle elements throughout. The reverse shows a yellow cotton backing with fine running-stitch construction. Executed in three layers of crimson, black, and yellow cotton, with appliquéd elements and extensive multicolor embroidered surface detail.
Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection.
