Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Densely worked reverse appliqué mola panel of exceptional iconographic richness organized across a deep red ground. Two large crested zoomorphic figures — one in orange and yellow at left, one in green at right — flank a central standing spirit figure rendered in turquoise blue, its body densely filled with horizontal polychrome stripe registers. Below the figure, a coiled pink and black serpent rears upward, its fanged head striking toward the figure above in a dramatic predatory encounter. Each flanking creature is densely filled with fine concentric embroidered lines and polychrome dot registers throughout. The upper border carries a continuous maze-form fret in orange on black, punctuated by four applied four-pointed star forms in blue, yellow, and pink, each with an embroidered eye at center. The lower register features a horizontal band of concentric rounded rectangles in blue, pink, yellow, and green. Two small appliquéd serpents with embroidered detail occupy the lower flanking positions. Executed in reverse appliqué, applied appliqué, and embroidery in red, black, orange, yellow, teal, blue, green, and pink cotton, in two layers.
