Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Exceptionally complex and narrative reverse appliqué mola panel organized around three large outstretched human figures on a saturated red ground. Two figures occupy the upper register, each nestled within a deeply concentric V-shaped enclosure, possibly a wrench or tool, rendered in orange, red, yellow, and teal with sawtooth inner borders; the inscriptions “NOMBRE” and “SELLAM” appear in multicolored appliquéd lettering above each figure respectively. A third large outstretched figure in black and teal dominates the lower center, its body densely filled with horizontal polychrome dash registers. The lower flanking figure stand upon or emerge from wrench or tool forms rendered in orange, each surmounted by a small quadruped with a white square eye. Heart-form motifs appear in both lower corners — one in blue and yellow, one in black and pink bearing the inscription “LA COL CD” — and a third heart form in yellow occupies the right mid-field. The upper edge carries a continuous multicolored comb-form border on black. Executed in reverse appliqué, applied appliqué, and embroidery in red, black, orange, yellow, teal, blue, pink, and purple cotton, in three layers.
