Description

Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
15.75 × 19 inches
Exceptionally rare and iconographically significant reverse appliqué mola panel depicting a syncretic Madonna and Christ Child composition rendered entirely in the Guna visual tradition. The dominant central figure — the Virgin Mary — is presented frontally in teal and green on a deep red ground, her large rounded head surrounded by a dramatic radiate halo of densely worked white embroidered lines on black. The Christ Child appears as a smaller dark figure in orange and black, nestled against the Virgin’s body with arms outstretched. A floral crown with cross finials rests upon the Madonna’s head. The saturated red ground is densely scattered throughout with multicolored triangle cutouts. Flanking kneeling figures in orange and yellow occupy the lower corners, while two angel- like figures in orange, yellow, and blue populate the upper register. The lower border carries the boldly appliquéd inscription “EUN MARIA” in multicolored lettering on pink. Executed in reverse appliqué, applied appliqué, and embroidery in red, black, teal, orange, yellow, blue, green, and pink cotton, in two layers.
Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection.
