Lot 82:
Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s
14 x 18 inches
Worked in three layers of reverse appliqué with appliqué and embroidery accents on a red ground. Dense, fully filled composition depicting a large stylized creature with bared teeth, a prominent eye, and a polychrome striped body, set beneath a sweeping crescent arc and a sky of six-pointed stars with embroidered compass-rose interiors. A chain of small oval forms extends from the creature’s head to a secondary figure at its back. Additional motifs include an hourglass-shaped vessel with embroidered linear details and polychrome striped bars throughout. Extensive embroidery in running stitch covers the ground, adding texture and movement across the entire surface. Exceptionally fine hand-stitching throughout.
