Description
Vintage c1950 Floral Mandala Quilt in a Baltimore Album Style, possibly copied from an 1858 quilt in the Brooklyn Museum. In 1938 as part of the New Deal and WPA the 1858 quilt was represented as a watercolor on paper by Margaret Concha, which is in the National Gallery of Art. This quilt was made by Genevieve Odom of Fayette County, PA. It measures 100 by 96 inches. The center wreath of flowers measures 27 inches in diameter, with the outer wreath of pink flowers measuring 54 inches in diameter. There are 16 appliqué block motifs in 3 different patterns that measure about 15 by 15 inches. And a border motif of a floral vine about 8 inches wide. All the designs are appliquéd onto a solid piece of white fabric, there is no piecing. The quilt maker carefully drafted lines on the fabric for her appliqué placement. It is hand appliquéd and hand quilted. There is thin cotton batting and an off white cotton reverse. The edge is finished with an applied green fabric binding. There is an appraisal included for documentation purposes, but I disagree with the appraisal in where she thought this was a kit. While Mrs Odom did make quilts from kits, she also was talented to reproduce quilts as evident in Paradise Garden Quilts and other works.
