Description
Antique 1841 Friendship Counterpane, summer spread, or Quilt Top with finished edges measuring about 106×109″, It is comprised of 49 blocks, 14.5 by 14.5 inches, set straight, 7 by 7. Each block consists of an 8 pointed Star in the center and each corner having a Delectable Mountain motif hand appliquéd in a variety of Turkey Red print fabrics. The blocks are hand pieced. Each block is hand inscribed in ink various names, psalms, biblical verses, and other sentiments with all the blocks having inscribed “A Token of Christian Friendship”, Aston (or Middletown) Township, Mount Hope (in Delaware County, PA) and dates varying from 1840 to 1841. The center block states that this bed quilt is presented to Mrs. Maria P Oram. That is a wonderful piece of local history! A quilt from Mount Hope labeled with the “Christian Friendship” group almost certainly originates from the Mount Hope United Methodist Church in Aston Township, Delaware County. The “Christian Friendship” group was a social and service-oriented circle within the church. Like many Methodist “Ladies Aid” or “Women’s Society” groups of the 19th and 20th centuries, they often created quilts for church fundraisers, as gifts for departing pastors, or as community “friendship quilts” where members paid a small fee to have their names embroidered on a block. The church is located on Concord Road in Aston. It was established in 1807, making it one of the oldest Methodist congregations in the region. A brief research also shows that Maria Oram may have been a reverend’s wife. There is no backing, batting, or quilting. But the edges are finished. This quilt top was previously part of the Pilgrim Roy Collection.
Condition report:
It is in fair condition with several small holes, minor fading, some appliquéd is lifting, and other small imperfections. Some conservation work appears to have been done previously.
