Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s

Finely worked reverse appliqué mola panel depicting a coiled serpent rendered in concentric bands radiating from a central core, executed in four layers of orange, maroon, black, and red cotton with appliqué accents and hand embroidery in blue, yellow, turquoise, green, purple, magenta, and white. Rows of closely spaced rectangular cutouts frame the composition on all sides, each revealing vibrant multi-colored fabrics beneath.
