Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Striking reverse appliqué mola panel depicting two spirit figures and a bird, outlined concentrically in yellow and lavender against a deep red ground. The figures feature embroidered chain-stitch eyebrows, appliquéd eyes, and seed-stitch detailing on the faces. The forms and surrounding background are densely filled with rows of elongated oval cutouts revealing a vivid array of underlying fabrics in blue, teal, pink, yellow, white, orange, and green, creating a shimmering mosaic effect across the entire panel. Teal and blue dashes fill the figures, while the background ovals transition through rainbow colorways. Executed in three layers of maroon, red, and grey cotton with yellow and lavender appliqué outlines and hand embroidery accents.
