Description

Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
14 x 19.5 inches
Vibrant pictorial reverse appliqué mola panel depicting a large church or mission building rendered in careful architectural detail. The structure features a steeply pitched roof decorated with diagonal rainbow-colored stripes separated by zigzag rickrack embroidery, a façade with multiple polychrome windows framed in concentric rectangles with cross-stitch embroidered curtains, and vertical bar detailing throughout. A small red steeple with a triangular pediment and cross stands at the upper right, while a flowering tree in a blue vase rises at upper left. Above the roofline, a red star, 2 flags, and rows of colorful dashes in green, orange, yellow, and pink fill the night sky. Executed in three layers of black, red, and orange cotton with extensive polychrome appliqué and dense hand embroidery in zigzag, cross-stitch, and running stitch patterns throughout.
Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection
