The Parker & Neal Mola Collection - Part 1
Lot 369:
Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
15 x 18.5 inches
Bold graphic reverse appliqué mola panel depicting three large stylized spatulas or tools arranged symmetrically, their wide bowls joined at center top and their handles branching downward into broad bases. Each form is filled with rows of vertical polychrome bars in pink, yellow, blue, green, and orange, outlined concentrically in yellow, orange, and maroon against a black ground. Clusters of rainbow-colored dash motifs in pink, light blue, yellow, orange, and green fill the surrounding negative space in an orderly grid arrangement. Executed in three layers of black, maroon, and yellow cotton with polychrome appliqué throughout. Even hand-stitching and clean lines give the composition a striking modernist quality.
Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection.
