Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Pictorial reverse appliqué mola panel depicting a commercial advertisement for Colombian Portland cement, rendered in the Guna textile tradition. A large pink triangular form dominates the composition, containing a central figure wearing a wide-brimmed hat and striped garments, a red banner reading “NMARCO,” and a leaping red jaguar with embroidered spots below. Polychrome appliqué lettering reading “CEMEST PORTLAND” flanks the triangle, with “DABUSCOLOMBIANA” spelled out in multicolored block letters along the bottom edge. Two flanking figures appear outside the triangle: a small spirit figure with raised arms and square headdress at left, and a red animal figure at right. Dense rows of colorful rectangular bars in green, orange, pink, and teal fill the black ground throughout. Executed in 2 layers of reverse appliqué and appliqué on black cotton with polychrome hand embroidery. A zigzag rickrack trim and striped band finish the top edge.
