Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Richly detailed pictorial reverse appliqué mola panel depicting a large soulbird with a polychrome striped body found in the lower left, alongside a central spirit figure with a green appliquéd head, embroidered facial features, striped wings, and a densely patterned torso covered in cross-stitch embroidery. A flowering plant with green leaves and a pink tulip-like blossom grows at left. Additional motifs include an embroidered daisy flower, white appliquéd bone or fetish forms at lower center, and polychrome leaf-shaped eye motifs at lower right. Orange maze-like channels wind throughout the black ground, unifying the composition. Executed in two layers of black and orange cotton with extensive polychrome appliqué and abundant hand embroidery in cross-stitch, running stitch, and decorative patterns throughout.
