Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Lively pictorial reverse appliqué mola panel depicting a stylized map of Panama outlined in blue and yellow, with a large black cat with embroidered whiskers seated within the landmass. A small stylized bird figure appears at lower left. The composition is filled with dense rectangular appliqué strip work in yellow, teal, blue, purple, orange, and pink against a vivid red ground. Executed in three layers of red, blue, and black cotton with green and yellow appliqué outlines defining the forms and extensive hand embroidery accents throughout. The background is richly textured with rows of horizontal bars in contrasting colors.
