Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Reverse appliqué, appliqué, and hand-embroidered mola panel featuring two confronting quadruped animals with white-inlaid eyes, each densely worked in multicolor running stitch, flanked by a pair of coiled serpents in the upper register and a central totem form, all set within a large arched oval composition, worked in three layers of red, black, and orange cotton. A lower register encloses two plant forms and a central diamond motif outlined in green and yellow. Large spiral scroll forms occupy the outer flanks, with polychrome appliquéd dash-stitch filling the borders throughout.
