Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s

Exceptionally dense and fully saturated mola panel featuring three stylized toucans on a red ground: two large confronting birds with prominently rendered circular eyes, boldly curved beaks, and bodies filled with densely worked multicolor chevron striping in teal, yellow, blue, pink, orange, and white, flanking a smaller central bird rendered in profile. The surrounding field is animated by paired spiral scrolls in the lower border, a large central spiral medallion, and S-form and step-fret motifs occupying the lateral margins. Scattered multicolor triangle elements punctuate the ground throughout. The upper edge carries a striped and sawtooth border with zig-zag embroidered detailing. The reverse shows a teal cotton backing with fine running-stitch construction outlining the composition. Executed in three layers of red, black, and teal cotton, with appliquéd elements and extensive multicolor embroidered surface detail.
