Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s

Vigorously worked narrative mola panel on a dense black ground featuring two large figures jointly bearing a diagonal cross: the left figure outlined in orange, wearing a black-banded hat with embroidered gold chain detail; the right figure outlined in yellow-green, rendered in profile. A spotted animal — outlined in orange with multicolor embroidered circle patterning across the body — occupies the upper center field, interpreted as a lamb or fantastical beast. The cross-bearing scene carries clear reference to Christian iconography as filtered through Guna visual tradition. Four stylized tulip or torch-flower forms with embroidered linear detailing punctuate the upper and lower corners. The surrounding ground is densely worked in vertical reverse-appliqué channels in red, yellow, blue, pink, teal, orange, and white cotton. Executed in two layers of black and red cotton, with appliquéd figures and extensive multicolor embroidered surface detail.
