Description
Antique 1852 Oak Leaf and Reel Quilt believed to be from NY, measuring 86 by hundred and 3 inches. It is comprised of 20 Oakleaf and Reel blocks, 15 by 15 inches, set straight, 4 by 5, with 1.75 inch wide Turkey red print sashing with white cornerstones. There is a 9 inch white border with appliqué birds leaves and berries, and squirrels in each corner. It is hand pieced, hand appliqued, and hand quilted. There is thin cotton batting and off white cotton reverse the edge is finished with an applied Turkey red print binding, by hand. The quilt has M Burdick and 1852 inscribed in the quilting stitches. While found in Lincoln Nebraska the owner did extensive research and genealogy on the quilt. Exact examples attributed to the family exist in the International Quilt Museum and the Shelburne Museum. The consignor has included several pages of her research for the next owner to take the reins and study this quilt compared to the other known examples. Unfortunately, the quilt is in poor condition. The black dye in the Turkey red print has totally disintegrated leaving all the fabric to appear like Swiss cheese. The quilt is still quite graphic, contains very unique design elements. And has historical value and study purpose. There is also consistent edge wear, toning, and spots.
