Description
A group of four hand reverse appliqué and appliqué mola panels, includes one matched set, each worked in two to three layers.
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s, 14 x 16.5 inches
A two layer black mola on a red ground with red herringbone and wave-pattern channels depicting three anthropomorphic figures with embroidered faces, surrounded by diamond-shaped cross motifs in multicolored embroidery. The combination of stylized human forms with cosmological symbols such as crossed circles reflects the Guna tradition of depicting spiritual or ceremonial narratives within a densely worked abstract field.
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s, 15 x 18 inches
A matched pair of molas worked in three layers on a red ground featuring a large symmetrical zoomorphic creature — rendered with a central face, splayed limbs, and curled tails — outlined in yellow and teal, with multicolored vertical dash fills throughout the background in pink, white, blue, and teal. The mirrored animal form with prominent facial features is characteristic of Guna depictions of spirit animals or mythological beings central to their cosmology.

A three layer mola on a red ground with a large flowing zoomorphic figure outlined in blue and yellow, with pink and lavender interior channels and multicolored accent fills in green, teal, purple, and yellow. The curvilinear organic form with key fret and spiral elements in the surrounding field suggests a creature from the Guna natural or spiritual world rendered in a bold, expressive compositional style.

Wear, fading, holes, loose applique and loose stitching. Pair has areas of fabric loss/holes. In house Flat Rate US Shipping of $15 for 1 -10 molas, $5 each additional 10 molas. Insurance is additional and required.
