Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

A matched pair of Guna geometric meander molas, each worked in three layers of reverse appliqué with appliqué accents and hand embroidery. Each panel features two large S-shaped meander forms stacked vertically on a red ground, with black, yellow, and orange channels. Two rows of polychrome Maltese cross appliqué motifs in blue, pink, turquoise, green, and orange fill the space between the meander forms. Crenellated and geometric appliqué filler accents along the upper register. Orange slit-cut bar details and yellow slit-cut accents along the sides. Green hand-embroidered running stitch detailing throughout.
