Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s–1970s

Boldly composed reverse appliqué mola panel depicting two large mirrored spirit faces in bilateral symmetry, executed in three layers of red, black, and teal cotton with extensive appliqué and hand embroidery throughout. Each face features prominent round spectacle-like eyes in orange with dark blue pupils, a broad open mouth baring white teeth, curving ears, and elaborate maze-like channeling forming the cheeks and jaws. The faces are densely embroidered with polychrome seed stitching across the cheeks. A small serpent figure with embroidered details appears between the two heads at center top, flanked by two additional bird or serpent forms at the upper corners. The background is enlivened with polychrome linear fill stitching in blue, yellow, pink, and teal.

Condition report:
