The Parker & Neal Mola Collection - Part 1
Lot 334:
Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s–1970s
13.5 x 18 inches
Boldly composed reverse appliqué mola panel depicting three large X-shaped nutcrackers with almonds, executed in three layers of red, black, and green cotton with extensive appliqué and hand embroidery throughout. The three nutcrackers are rendered in black with green and orange outlines, each cradling oval almonds with polychrome embroidered details at the crux. Five animated human figures in silhouette occupy the spaces between and beside the nutcrackers — two standing figures with striped garments flank the outer edges, while a skirted female figure and a seated figure appear in the lower register. Yellow zigzag embroidery enlivens the nutcracker arms throughout. The background is densely filled with polychrome linear stitching in yellow, pink, blue, and green.
Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection.
