Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Graphic mola panel featuring two large five-pointed star medallions set within circular frames at the center, surrounded by eight smaller shield- or pennant-shaped cartouches arranged in upper and lower registers, each containing a colored panel with vertical reverse-appliqué slits, executed in three layers of black, red, and yellow cotton, with additional appliqué and hand embroidery in lime, pink, yellow, blue, green, lavender, magenta, and white. Strong geometric organization with serrated and stepped contour lines, dense hand-stitching throughout, and small embroidered detailing at the centers of the star medallions.
