Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Bold mola panel composed of five stylized tulip or bell-form blossoms arranged in a symmetrical composition, with three larger blooms across the upper register and two smaller paired forms in the lower register, each flower head containing fine hand embroidery at its center, executed in three layers of red, black, and gree cotton, with additional appliqué and hand embroidery in yellow, pink, magenta, green, blue, turquoise, lavender, and white. The interiors of the blossoms are filled with closely worked rows of running-stitch embroidery and chevron detailing, surrounded by a field of vertical reverse-appliqué slits in jewel tones.
