Description

Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
17 x 20.5 inches
Reverse appliqué mola panel featuring a bold butterfly wing or chevron composition with multiple concentric bands creating a dynamic radiating pattern. The design showcases distinctive scalloped or rickrack edges throughout the layered bands, adding exceptional textural interest and technical complexity. The central cross-form arrangement is surrounded by scattered geometric accent elements and linear motifs in the corner fields. Worked in three layers of black, red, orange cotton, achieved through advanced reverse appliqué, appliqué, and hand embroidery techniques. Demonstrates exceptional technical mastery with precise curved cutwork, intricate scalloped edge finishing, and sophisticated multi-layer color reveals. The fully saturated composition shows perfect bilateral symmetry with expert control of complex nested chevron forms.
Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection.
