Description

Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
15 x 21.5 inches
Reverse appliqué mola panel featuring an intricate abstract botanical composition of interlacing vine forms radiating from a central axis. The flowing organic design creates graceful vine segments, each filled with parallel linear leaf or stem patterns in brilliant contrasting colors. The botanical motifs are surrounded by a field of multicolored vertical dash patterns suggesting scattered seeds or botanical elements. Worked in three layers of black, red, and turquoise, and accent colors including yellow, white, pink, green, blue, and purple cotton, achieved through masterful reverse appliqué and appliqué techniques. Demonstrates exceptional technical skill with precise curved cutwork following the organic vine forms, dense hand-stitching throughout, and sophisticated color layering. The fully saturated composition shows strong radial growth pattern with expert control of complex interlocking botanical forms.
Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection.
