The Parker & Neal Mola Collection - Part 1
Lot 291:
Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
13.5 x 17 inches
Pair of reverse appliqué and appliqué mola panels with hand embroidery, each featuring a central circular sun motif surrounded by dramatic radiating zigzag borders that create a powerful solar or celestial effect. The central medallions display concentric bands with internal linear patterning, while the zigzag rays extend to the panel edges in alternating colors. The corner fields are filled with multicolored dash patterns in yellow, blue, green, white, and orange, creating dynamic background texture. Each panel demonstrates exceptional geometric precision in the radiating pattern, requiring careful planning to achieve perfect symmetry. Worked in three layers of cotton in red, blue, orange, with meticulous hand-stitching maintaining sharp points and clean edges throughout the complex zigzag formations. The matched pair shows consistent execution and color coordination.
