Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s–1970s

Reverse appliqué, appliqué, and hand-embroidered mola panel depicting a Nativity scene set within a peaked-roof stable, executed in two layers of black and orange cotton. The central composition features a bearded Joseph in flowing striped robes standing beside the Virgin Mary with long hair, with the swaddled Christ Child in a haloed manger below. A donkey with cross-hatched muzzle appears at left. Two winged cherub angels with white faces and flowing hair flank the roofline above, with the Star of Bethlehem centered at the gable peak. The stable interior is filled with dense polychrome slitwork in a full spectrum of colors including pink, blue, green, purple, yellow, and white. Faces and hands are rendered in white cotton with finely embroidered features throughout.
