Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s–1970s

Reverse appliqué, appliqué, and hand-embroidered mola panel depicting two full-bodied human-like figures in profile wearing neckties, clasping hands at center, with a monkey-like figure observing from above and scattered letter and number motifs including “A,” “M,” “S,” and “8,” executed in three layers of red, black, and orange cotton. Dense polychrome slitwork fills throughout in yellow, blue, green, pink, purple, and white. The composition possibly references diplomatic relations or negotiations between the United States and Panama.
