Description
Cranberry Arabesque Quilt by Frances Abell Brand measures 75×75″ and made in 2000. Machine pieced, hand appliqued and hand-quilted, Cranberry Arabesque is a masterful collection of Scherenschnitte technique applique motifs with a dogtooth design border. This beauty is all appliqued by hand using regular and reverse applique, done very carefully and with much precision. The outer border of triangles was pieced with her 1948 Singer Featherweight. Four perimeter squares have the lighter background color, which sets the quilt off beautifully. One of these lighter squares features wonderful silhouettes of cats & roosters. Colors are rust orange print with pale yellow and peach solids. There is a label and sleeve attached to the reverse. This quilt won the Outstanding Hand Quilting Award at the 2000 Vermont Quilt Festival. Frances Abell Brand (b. 1913, Milton, Massachusetts) is a celebrated American quilt artist whose work is rooted in traditional design, Early American decorative techniques, and the spirit of rural New England. Her quilts are held in the permanent collections of both the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky, and the New England Quilt Museum in Lowell, Massachusetts — a distinction earned by only the most accomplished quilt artists. Over more than two decades of juried competition, Frances amassed an extraordinary record of recognition, including awards at the Vermont Quilt Festival for 20 consecutive years and the prestigious Founder’s Award presented by Richard Cleveland in 2006. Her solo exhibition Two Visionaries debuted at the Vermont Quilt Festival in 2000 and subsequently travelled to the National Quilt Museum, and her work has been featured in Good Housekeeping and American Quilter magazines. Each of her handmade heirloom quilts reflects a lifetime of mastery, discipline, and an artist’s deep reverence for America’s quilting heritage.
