Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Worked in three layers of black, red, and green cotton with extensive polychrome appliqué and hand embroidery throughout, this symmetrically composed narrative mola depicts paired parachute scenes. The panel is organized around two large rounded medallion forms side by side, each framed in concentric outlines of orange and green. The left medallion bears the appliquéd inscription “PARACAÍDAS” in multicolored letters beneath a celestial register of embroidered stars and crescent moon forms; the right medallion echoes the composition with zigzag mountain elements in blue and yellow in place of text, surmounted by the same star and crescent motifs. Below each medallion hangs a suspended gondola or basket form rendered in polychrome reverse appliqué channel work, each containing two small embroidered figures wearing broad-brimmed hats with cross-stitch chest markings, flanked by small triangular pennant flags with embroidered star details. The lower register of each gondola is filled with interlocking geometric channel work in green, orange, yellow, and blue. Scattered star appliqués appear throughout the red ground field. Consistent hand-stitching throughout.
