Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Richly worked reverse appliqué, appliqué, and embroidery mola panel featuring a densely packed all-over composition of large sweeping curvilinear forms organized around a vertical axis, with the flowing orange-outlined channels creating interlocking ovoid and biomorphic compartments across the entire field. Nested within the major forms are six circular medallions each containing a distinctive four-armed pinwheel or cross motif, rendered individually in blue, purple, yellow-green, olive, pink, and yellow, imparting variety and visual rhythm across the composition. Additional filler elements include stepped S-forms, zigzag devices, comb-like motifs in teal and white, and small scattered triangles throughout. A large central arch form encloses a yellow comb or arch element, anchoring the composition. Executed in three layers of red, burgundy, and orange cotton, with extensive polychrome embroidered accents in yellow, blue, teal, purple, pink, green, and white.
