Description

Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s
15 × 17.5 inches
Finely worked reverse appliqué, appliqué, and embroidery mola panel featuring a large bold central composition of four-part radial symmetry, its arms formed by nested chevron and arrow forms meeting at a central axis and terminating at top and bottom in paired heart-shaped scrolls. The continuously flowing labyrinthine channels create a dynamic X-form that fills the central field with exceptional precision and control. Each arm and terminal is outlined in multiple concentric layers of color, revealing the underlying strata with great clarity. The surrounding field is densely filled with vertical dash-and-stripe embroidery throughout. Executed in three layers of red, black, and dark gray cotton, with extensive polychrome embroidered accents in yellow, orange, green, blue, pink, and white. Blue rick-rack trim along the upper border.
Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection.
