Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Boldly worked reverse appliqué, appliqué, and embroidery mola panel featuring a large central two-headed chicken rendered in vivid red appliqué against a black ground, its layered bodies densely filled with horizontal striped banding in a full spectrum of polychrome colors. The two heads face outward and are elaborately detailed with embroidered interior patterning, starburst eyes, and open beaks. Appliquéd text reading “GALLINA DOS CABESA” arches across the upper register in multicolored letters, identifying the subject. Four smaller attendant birds occupy the lower border and upper right corner. The surrounding field is filled with dense vertical and horizontal dash-and-stripe embroidery throughout. A green rick-rack trim decorates the upper border. Executed in three layers of black, red, and charcoal cotton, with extensive polychrome embroidered accents in yellow, orange, blue, green, pink, purple, and teal.
