Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s

Boldly worked reverse appliqué mola panel depicting the Crucifixion, with a large central cross bearing the inscription “JESUS” and a densely stitched figure of Christ with outstretched arms. Two thieves on flanking crosses occupy the lower left and right fields. A Roman soldier with a spear approaches from the lower left, accompanied by a small figure in ceremonial dress. Two standing mourners attend the right cross, while a prostrate figure in yellow outline lies at lower right. The composition is set against a black ground saturated throughout with rows of polychrome vertical dash forms. Executed in three layers of black, red, and orange cotton with extensive applied appliqué passages and polychrome embroidery throughout.
