Description
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
Measures 13 × 16 inches
Vividly worked reverse appliqué mola panel depicting the Nativity, with the infant Jesus rendered in red on a white striped swaddling cloth at center, flanked by Mary and Joseph, each with elaborately layered concentric halo forms. A large winged angel with long flowing hair presides above, holding a six-pointed star staff, her triangular robed body adorned with a four-petaled flower motif. Two radiant six-pointed stars anchor the upper corners of the composition. A lamb and ox flank the manger below, their bodies densely filled with polychrome running stitch. The ground is saturated throughout with rows of multicolored appliquéd triangles against a crimson field. Executed in two layers of red and black cotton with extensive applied appliqué passages and polychrome embroidery throughout.
