A Legacy in Stitches: The Quilt Art of Ellen Schargel Rosenbach
Lot 200:
Description
Vintage c1930s Carolina Lily Quilt measuring 78 by 93 inches. There are 30 Carolina Lilly blocks, 9.5 by 9.5 inches, set on point, 6 by 7, with off white on point setting squares. There is a lovely green scalloped border with pink buds mimicking the scalloped edge. It is hand and machine pieced, hand appliquéd, and hand quilted. There is thin cotton batting and an off white cotton reverse. The edge is finished with an applied green solid fabric binding. The quilt is in fair condition, with small spots, small tear, minor edge wear, and the quilt may have been dry cleaned based on the overall discoloration and pilling in the batting to the front and back. The quilt comes with paperwork from the Maine Quilt Documentation Project, though the quilt appears to have been found in an attic in Massachusetts with no other history available. Along with Vintage c1930 Glittering Star Quilt measuring 68 by 79 inches it is comprised of 42 pieced blocks, 7.5 by 7.5 inches, set on point, 6 by 7, with an over dyed green print on point setting squares and triangles. There is a 2.25 inch solid pink border. There is thin cotton batting and a solid pink reverse. The edge is finished with an applied pink fabric binding. I believe the pink border, backing, and quilting are from the 1930s with the quilt blocks and over dyed green top portion from 1890. It is hand pieced and hand quilted. In poor condition with overall fading and fabric deterioration in the star block double pink background fabric, along with other small spots and imperfections and edge wear along one 2 sides.
