Description
Antique 1867 Patriotic Potholder Quilt measuring 81 by 85 inches. It is comprised of 30 blocks, about 12 5 by 12.5 inches, set straight, 5 by 6, with a triple strip border along 3 sides. It is hand pieced, hand quilted, hand embroidered, and hand appliquéd. 20 blocks are red white and blue stripes, each block alternating in direction. One block in the center is a blue ground with 13 white stars hand appliquéd with red thread buttonholes stitches. The block above has hand embroidered initials and a block below has a hand embroidered year, 1867. The quilt is constructed potholder method, with each block individually about and then stitched together. There is thin cotton batting and a tan reverse on each block and border. It is in poor condition with fading, spots, discolorations, small holes and wear and other small imperfections. I also believe that the binding has been replaced was applied by machine.
