Fall Antique & Vintage Quilt & Textile Auction
Lot 68:
Description
Antique 1884 Victorian Crazy Quilt – believed to be from Sayre, PA. It measures 80 x 82 inches. It is comprised of 9 blocks, 19.5 x 19.5 inches, set straight, 3 by 3, with a one inch red and white striped inner border, and a 9 inch scrappy ice cream cone style border appliquéd on black velvet. It is machine pieced, machine appliquéd, and hand embroidered. There appears to be no batting, but there is a muslin reverse. The edge is finished with the front brought to the back, and applied by hand. The arrangements of the blocks give the quilt a medallion style visual presentation. Embroidered motifs include birds, flowers, Kate Greenaway figures, and more. One block is hand embroidered “Mother – age 52 – 1884”. Most of the seams are hand embroidered in decorative stitches. It is in fair condition with several silks shattering, discolorations, and may have some conservation work. There is a hand written letter accompanying the quilt with the authors opinion of crazy quilts which is quite interesting. The consignor is open to sharing the family name of the quilt maker to the winning bidder. If you have any doubt, please ask questions!
