Description
Antique c1785 Copperplate Printed Textile in the design known as The Apotheosis of Franklin and Washington, printed in England for the American market. It measures 43 by 29 inches. It is printed in a single red on a plain weave cotton ground. The scene shows George Washington standing in a chariot drawn by leopards and holding the reins, with Liberty seated beside him carrying a liberty cap on a staff and an oval shield lettered America Independence 1776. Two Native American figures walk alongside, one sounding a trumpet and one carrying a striped flag. Benjamin Franklin appears at the upper right beside a female figure raising a liberty cap, under a banner reading Where Liberty Dwells There Is My Country. A winged figure in a plumed helmet carries a shield of thirteen stars, cherubs hold a globe lettered The Atlantic Ocean with Virginia, N. Carolina, S. Carolina, and Georgia named along the coast, and a winged trumpeter kneels before a domed Temple of Fame. A palm trunk at the left carries banners lettered Liberty Tree and Stamp Act, with trophies of arms, drums, cannon, and stacked shot below. The design is engraved in fine line and cross hatching, and the vertical repeat measures about 37 inches, well beyond the circumference of a printing roller, which points to copperplate printing. One edge is turned and hemmed by hand and the remaining edges are cut, so the piece has been reduced from a larger panel or furnishing.
Condition report:
It is fragile and in fair condition with discoloration, fabric deterioration and small holes.
