Description

Group of 3 molas with hand reverse appliqué and appliqué construction throughout, each worked in three layers.
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s, 15.5 x 20.5 inches
Mirrored curvilinear abstract composition featuring four S-spiral lobed forms with bar-filled centers, worked in a tonal red-on-red palette with orange channel outlines on a red ground. The restrained, monochromatic color scheme allows the complexity of the interlocking curvilinear cutwork to take visual precedence, a hallmark of skilled Guna design.
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s, 14.75 x 18.5 nches
Allover interlocking rectangular S-spiral labyrinth pattern worked in magenta on a navy blue ground with orange channel outlines. The continuous, densely interlocked key pattern fills the entire panel without interruption, reflecting a traditional Guna maze-like geometric composition of considerable visual rhythm.
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s, 14.5 x 19 inches
Mirrored angular X-form composition with radiating arms on a black ground, worked in red with green and orange channel outlines, featuring small multicolored rectangular and S-spiral accent elements in blue, white, and purple along the upper register. The bold bilateral design with its central starburst and colorful detail work reflects traditional Guna abstract patterning with rickrack trim along the upper border.
Provenance: From the Parker & Neal Collection.
