Description
A group of three hand reverse appliqué and appliqué mola panels, each worked in two to three layers.
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s, 15 x 19 inches
A 2 layer mola on a red ground with a central branching plant form surrounded by maze-like channels in tan, with multicolored star-shaped and floral accent motifs filled with appliqued accents in blue, green, orange, purple, and pink. The composition combines traditional Guna labyrinth patterning with a botanical subject, a format that links the natural world to the abstract design vocabulary of mola-making.
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s, 16 x 22 inches
A 3 layer mola featuring bold, flowing curvilinear forms in black and orange on a red ground, with orange embroidered dashes along the borders. The free-form organic composition fills the entire panel with interlocking biomorphic shapes, representing the Guna tradition of allover abstract design without a fixed central motif.
Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1960s, 18 x 20 inches
A two layer zoomorphic mola on a pale green ground with dense, interlocking organic forms in gray and red, with a multicolored sawtooth appliqué border along the top edge and a pink-and-white striped cotton yoke. The fully saturated surface of flowing animal figures and curvilinear channels reflects a compositional approach in which positive and negative space interlock across the entire panel.

Condition report:
All 3 molas display wear, fading, and spots or discoloration. An area of reapair is visible on the red/beige mola. In house Flat Rate US Shipping of $15 for 1 -10 molas, $5 each additional 10 molas. Insurance is additional and required.
